Art Impacts A Child’s Ability to Learn

children and artThe arts in education have, in recent times, become an extraneous part of the classroom. More and more schools are phasing out art instruction and expression as the sciences get favor. But this is dangerous, not just emotionally for children, but it also affects kid’s ability to think critically, to engage in team play, and aids cognition.

In her article Art Influences Learning, for Earlychildhood News, Anne Reyner, an art therapist says, “Art engages children’s senses in open-ended play and develops Cognitive, Social, Emotional, and Sensori-Motor skills. Art is a cooperative learning experience that provides pleasure, challenge, and a sense of mastery.”

Integrating art into the academics is crucial to complete understanding of a subject. Having children draw a picture story of something they have just read, is a wonderful way to ensure that they understand what they read. Using art as an adjunct to science and math allows each student to develop his or her own unique way of expressing comprehension, by doing something creative related to the subject at hand.

Reyner goes on to say, “Art can be looked at through the lens of mathematics. Young children can work with simple collage materials and beads to introduce numbers, positive and negative space, classification, and sequencing and pattern recognition. “She then quotes Carla Farsi, a math professor at the University of Colorado who says, “Math is not just about numbers, formulas and logic, math is also about structure, symmetry, shape, and beauty. Conversely, art is not only about emotions, color, and aesthetics, but also about rhythm, pattern, and problem solving’ “.

It is a shame that the arts have taken a back seat in education. They can offer ways to expand children’s minds, and assist in their absorption of information, as well as aid in their thinking skills.

Hunakai Stuidio offers you art education not only so that you and your children can experience the arts, but so that the rest of your lives can be enriched as well.
