Expressing yourself artistically helps people to resolve issues, developing and managing behaviors and feelings, reduce stress levels, and improve a person’s self-esteem and their self awareness.

The great thing about art therapy is you don’t need to be a creative genius in order to receive the benefits and healing that art therapy can bring. It will also help you to better understand yourself as well, too.

Who Can Benefit from Art Therapy?

The simple answer to this is everyone! There are so many different ways that a person can express themselves, and art is just one of those ways. Oftentimes people don’t know which words to use in order to explain themselves or their feelings, and this is where art therapy steps in. Seeing patterns in the art and creations can speak the words for you. People of all ages and backgrounds can benefit from this, especially if they don’t know how to voice their problems.

An art therapist would be studied in both art and therapy, and would have a master’s degree in at least one, if not both these subjects.

Art therapists can work with people of all ages, races, genders, etc. depending on the situation, they may work with someone individually, or they may speak to a whole family.

An art therapist would be trained to pick up on symbols and metaphors used in the art that might be otherwise difficult to verbalize. The process of picking up on these symbols is where the healing and growth begins.

Just like other forms of therapy, art therapy is used in order to treat something or improve your mental and emotional well-being. However, art therapy can also be used as a stress reliever and as a way to really discover yourself through a creative outlet.

You don’t need to have prior experience with art and artistic expression, since this is something you would be guided through in the sessions. It might not seem very natural at first, but going through this process is very rewarding. The goal of the artistic process won’t be to create a masterpiece, but simply to learn more about yourself and your struggles which would then lead to better self esteem and awareness.
