One of our favorite things to do in the fall is admire some of the beautiful artworks that capture the incredible colors and feelings of the season. Here are four of our favorite famous fall artworks to start the autumn season off right.
“Apple Tree with Red Fruit”
“Apple Tree with Red Fruit” was painted in 1902 by Paul Ranson, and is a gorgeous oil on canvas that truly evokes of the colors of the autumn season. The painting shows a valley in the background – mostly brown, with splashes of green and yellow still present – but in the foreground, the painting focuses on the dark bark of an apple tree and its ruby red apples. This painting is housed in the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Texas, and has some echoes of Vincent van Gogh’s famous “Almond Blossom.”
“Golden Autumn” was painted by Russian artist Isaac Levitan in 1895, and is another beautiful example of an oil on canvas landscape that is perfectly represents the season. A river that looks almost real enough to be a photograph runs along the right edge of the painting, while trees at the peak of their seasonal change sit above a sloping hillside of fading green grasses along the left side. This beautiful painting is housed in the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Russia, and is a great example of the Russian realist’s beautiful paintings.
“Autumn Tree,” an oil on canvas piece that was created by Leo Gestel in the 20th century, brings more vibrant and modern styling to our list. This painting mixes many colors that you might find during the fall – minus the sad browns – to create a unique painting of a massive willow tree in fall dress standing high above the surrounding landscape that is changing also with the season. This painting is on display at The Hague in the Netherlands.
“The Birch Wood”
“The Birch Wood,” a unique painting by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt, is an oil on canvas work that is now held in a private collection. Its beautiful view of birch trees at season’s change highlights the last of the green of the season – the mossy growths on the base of the trees – and shows the beautiful autumnal colors now shed to the forest floor. The painting offers exceptional realism, with intricate detail given to each leaf on the ground.
These are just a few of our favorite options, and there are many more beautiful paintings to capture the essence of the season. Did your favorite not make the list? Share what painting – or other artwork – speaks to you about fall in the comments below.
