Growing up With Art

Art provides children an avenue for creativity, and a place for them to express themselves in a safe, imaginative way. Getting children involved in art classes from an early age inspires them to explore new ways of expression and imagination. Because we recognize the importance of art in a young child’s life, we created a series of classes to suit the needs of our youngest artists. Each class builds on the previous one in terms of skills, theories and concepts.

Enroll your children in the following classes now to jumpstart their interests in the arts.

Art Exploration (Grades K-1)

An introductory class geared toward teaching our youngest artists about art mediums and techniques, this class includes all aspects and mediums of art with a focus on introducing these youngsters to materials and techniques.

This class is perfect for students new to Hunakai Studio, and is best suited for those in kindergarten and first grade. Classes are held Tuesdays from 4-5:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Art Essentials (Grades 1-2)

After learning the basics of our art materials and techniques, the next class teaches building skills and knowledge of drawing, painting and 3D projects. Some key aspects students explore include fine motor skills, art history, materials exploration and imagination.

Designed to build skill and understanding for each project, Art Essentials is for students in second grade who are attending classes for the first time at Hunakai. Students who have completed previous sessions at Hunakai and are in first grade are also recommended for this class.

We offer this class in two sessions, both held Saturdays from 10-11:30 a.m. and from 1-2:30 p.m., respectively.

Art Experience (Grades 2-3)

Art Experience builds on the other two classes by continuing to teach students skills and through introducing new concepts including form that is more complex, values, color theory and perspective.

For students who are in third grade and attending class at Hunakai for the first time or for those in second grade who have taken previous sessions with us, this class is offered Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 4-5:30 p.m.

Art Fundamentals (Grades 3-4)

A class specifically designed for this stage in artist development, Art Fundamentals allows students to explore the key aspects of art creation with encouragement to explore their own creativity as well. Areas such as drawing, painting, sculpture, art history and others are covered during classes, expanding students’ minds and opening them to new avenues of creative expression.

This class is offered Thursdays from 4-5:30 p.m.

Homeschool Group

To fit the needs of our homeschooled students, we offer a general art class that covers all aspects of art, including acrylic painting, watercolors, drawing, sculpture, art history and more.

Students in homeschooled first- through fourth-grade equivalents are invited to attend this class, which is offered Wednesdays from 10:30-11:30 a.m.
